How to fix “caught while smoked”?
- 1Smoke when you know the target: a visible hero, enemy wards or Roshan, not a walk through the jungle.
- 2Before smoking, count which enemies have ultimates and BKB ready: are you stronger right now.
- 3Path around enemy wards, or the smoke breaks in front of everyone.
- 4If the target left, walk out of the smoke to your own wards instead of hunting further.

How the coach counts it
What is “caught while smoked” in Dota 2?
A smoke should give you a surprise fight on your terms. Here it went the other way: the group ran into enemies who were ready or stronger, and lost the trade.
How does the coach find this mistake?
The coach finds every smoke you were under and counts deaths on both teams while the group is smoked and for 20 seconds after it breaks. More of yours died than theirs, so the smoke was punished. Smokes before the horn are not rated.
Why does “caught while smoked” cost games?
Smokes usually take almost the whole team. A lost fight after a smoke often costs three heroes at once, and a Roshan or a tower with them.
How it differs from similar mistakes
- Caught alone
Caught alone: enemies opened the fight on you while you had no allies nearby. Caught in smoke: your group moved under Smoke of Deceit and lost more heroes than it killed.
